Piano Lessons
St. Johns County, FL

Our piano programs are divided into three stages, each focusing on a particular age-appropriate level of music development, literacy, and creative exploration.

Friends at the Piano

Beginners, Ages 5-6

Our Friends at the Piano program is the perfect introduction to the piano for young children! These 45-minute small group classes foster young learners' musical development through play-based activities, both on and off the bench. Students learn basic rhythmic notation, pre-staff reading, and proper technique while engaging in movement, singing, imitation, and improvisation with their peers.

Piano Foundations

Beginners-Early Intermediate, Ages 7+

The Piano Foundations program focuses on building confidence and independence, strong music reading skills, proper piano technique, and creativity. Our unique format accelerates the learning process, allowing students to progress at more than double the rate of traditional lessons. Students take weekly 60-minute lessons where they receive individual instruction within a small group setting, allowing them to experience the benefits of learning with peers while still receiving personalized attention and guidance.

Artist Development

Intermediate-Advanced, Ages 7+

YAMP's Artist Development program offers intermediate and advanced piano students a structured path to mastering their craft. Students explore various genres of music, build a strong foundation in proper technique and music theory, and explore music through topics they are interested in such as improvisation, arranging, composition, and accompanying. Through a combination of weekly private lessons and occasional group musicianship classes, students gain valuable performance experience in a casual environment, and learn to play in an ensemble setting.

Piano FAQs

  • Yes. If you don't currently have one, we can help you find the best option for your family.

  • Ahhh...'tis the question. Many people think an acoustic piano is best in all situations, but we disagree. While a good acoustic piano will be necessary at some point, buying a cheap acoustic piano with bad regulation and action can be detrimental to a young piano student's progress. For this reason, it is absolutely acceptable, and sometimes better, to start with a digital piano as long as it has weighted keys (preferably a graded-hammer action) and the action isn't too heavy. When you come to your trial lesson, we'll talk about the best options for your specific situation.

  • The simple answer: Simply put—we want what’s best for our students! Based on research and experience, we have seen students in our unique group format learn more than twice as fast as students in traditional piano lessons.

The longer answer: Our group lessons aren’t traditional group lessons where every student is forced to progress at the same rate, or be left behind. Rather, we’ve developed a unique approach that allows students to experience the benefits of learning in a group, while still receiving individual instruction and guidance. In this format, we have seen our students become better pianists and learn more than twice as fast as they did in traditional lessons.

  • All beginning students start in Piano Foundations. Transfer students who are still in method books (i.e. Faber Piano Adventures, Piano Safari, Alfred Basic Piano Course, etc.) might be placed in Piano Foundations depending on their proficiency. When you come to your trial, we will assess your child and make the appropriate recommendation.

  • Musicianship Classes are 60-minute classes held on specific weeks throughout the lesson year in place of the student's weekly private lesson. They are an opportunity for students to build camaraderie with one another, gain performance experience in a casual environment, and learn to play in an ensemble setting.

  • Our Friends at the Piano classes primarily use the Piano Safari method. Piano Foundations uses a combination of the Piano Express method book and supplemental music. Artist Development is a post-method book program. Students in this program learn level-appropriate repertoire and RCM theory books, as well as supplemental curricula in arranging/composition/improvisation, etc. depending upon the student's interests.
